Davy's Driving School - The Practical Test
The practical test has been designed to make sure you can drive safely whilst unaccompanied. It also tests you have a sound knowledge of the Highway Code.
Your driving test will start with an eyesight check. You must be able to read a number plate from 20.5 metres. If you fail this you will fail the complete practical test.
Next you will be asked 2 questions from the Show Me, Tell Me questions bank. These are widely published and can be read here.
You will then start your practical driving test which will include some specific manoeuvres.
The driving part of the test will last 35 to 40 minutes. You will then be examined on your general driving and on two reversing exercises. The reversing exercises will be chosen from:
You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.
Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out the set exercises. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.
